Travel

http://www.travelocity.com/

Travelocity.com is a good cite to use when traveling to find hotels and flights. When traveling to see Zeus's Temple in Olympia I would suggest stopping in Athens first. If you are traveling from Texas where I live there is just a flight into Athens not into Olympia which is just fine since Athens has some amazing cites as well.

Example Itinerary: Arrive on a Monday in Athens after a 12 hour flight from Dallas. Your will be exhausted and probably want to head straight to a hotel for dinner, a shower, and a good nights sleep.

Starting out fresh Tuesday: They have hotels very close to the acropolis and you can get there by car or tour bus (You can get to the base but the surrounding paths are careless so plan on walking. Also eat a big breakfast because day bags are not allowed in.) Plan on getting there as early as possible to avoid large crowds. Here you can see all of the buildings on the acropolis and the museum there. If you are coming on a Tuesday both the museum and the Acropolis open at 8am-7pm in the summer and then 8am-sunset in the winter. After seeing the museum, the parthenon, the temple of athena nike, the erechtheion, head over to the Theater of Dionysus and enjoy this ancient theatrical site. Also check out the The Odeon of Herodes Atticus that is close to the theater. While up here you might want to check out  Areopagus of Athens which is on the west side or Kerameikos which is to the Northwest. Once done with all of this I would say it would be time to eat. I would suggest eating in Thission which is full of bars, cafes, and tons of night life. I would suggest sticking around here and enjoying your night before heading back to your hotel for the night. (I would suggest bringing a change of clothes if you are going clubbing.)

Wednesday: Rise and shine and get ready for a museum. The National Archaeological Museum
is our next stop because it houses Poseidon's statue along with tons of ancient art. I would suggest getting here at opening at 8:30 and staying till around 12 or 1. After grabbing lunch though it will be time to take an hours ride away from Athens to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. Many companies over tours here if you do not wish to just go your self. This site is a nice get away though from the hustle and bustle of Athens so I would suggest taking your time here. After done with this site though I would say time for dinner and more night life. Or you could get a head start on the 4/5 hour trip to Olympia and get yourself a hotel near there. I would suggest this so that you can get started on the Museum early.

Thursday:Time for the Main event with Olympia. Depending on if you left the night before or this morning would effect how much time you have in the day to spend here. While in Olympia though today you will get to experience another Archaeological Museum, you can see the site of the ORIGINAL Olympics, you can see the temple of Hera (Zeus's sister/Wife) but most importantly you get to see the temple of ZEUS! This whole day I would suggest looking around all of these sites and maybe even the ongoing archaeological site that is still being researched and dug up. Enjoy all that this city has to offer you while here.

Friday: Time to start rounding things up. I would say today you travel to any site that you missed. You could keep exploring Olympia and the surrounding areas, you could go back to Athens, but if I were you I would take a a charter plane out to Crete early in the morning and stay for the day. The island as loads of archaeological sites and was home to the ancient Minoans. This whole island is loaded with history. Charter planes are the most common way to get here but you could also take a boat or scheduled flight.

After this final night it is time to head back to the states. I hope that you have enjoyed your stay in Greece!!!
