Sites In Crete

A trip to Crete would be a nice addition to a trip to Greece because it is covered in history. And though for this particular trip I have been encouraging everyone predominantly to go see Zeus's temple because he is the head God, because Olympia is the site of the original Olympics and because it has an open archaeological site coming to Crete would still be a good place to come because the Minoans were some of the original settlers even before the people in Athens and Olympia so it is cool to come and see a culture that is even older. For the record though this part would have nothing to do with the Greek Gods since they prodomanatly worshiped the snake God and this portion is only in here because I think that people would enjoy these sites and it works with the time period that I am encouraging people to see.

Sites In Olympia

Once you have enjoyed all that there is to see in Athens make your way 4 hours give or take over to Olympia. It is located in a site called the Altis in Peloponnese Greece. Here you will find the site that housed one of the seven wonders of the ancient world along with many other sites.

Sites to see:
The Temple of Hera

There are the sites for the original Olympics in Olympia

Here is the floor plan of Olympia:
While here stop in at the Museum to see loads of ancient art:
Like this:
The site that I would be most eager to see here is the site of Zeus's Temple:
Also while in Olympia's site it would be interesting to see the Archeological site that exists in Olympia:

History

Olympia is the original home of the Olympic. During the Olympics all war would stop and countries would compete against each other in physical test. The site was almost lost forever after its final games in 393AD but was rediscovered back in 1829. Olympia is also important because of the Temples that are built will in its walls. The Temple of Zeus at Olympia was constructed during 5C BC but in 5AD it was damaged badly by christian zealots and then was destroyed finally by an earthquake not long after. It now stands as just ruin. Another important temple here is the Temple of Hera. The Temple of Hera is one of the oldest buildings in the site of Olympia. It was begun in 7BC. Today it is mostly ruins but some of the columns have been rebuilt up to give us an idea of what it would have looked like. The museum that is on the site makes it possible to view some of the worlds oldest art.

Sites in Athens

When on your way to the Temple of Zeus in Olympia it would be wise to stop in Athens for a few nights and check out all of the history that this city has to offer.

Some good sites would be:
The Acropolis Museum
http://www.theacropolismuseum.gr/

The Propylaia which is the gate way to the acropolis

The actual Acropolis where there is the parthenon
the Temple of Athena Nike

 the Erechtheion
And on the south slope of the Acropolis is the Theater of Dionysus which is a cool site to see

Other sites not on the Acropolis would be:
North west of the Acropolis is Kerameikos

and west of the Acropolis there is the Areopagus of Athens

And if you are looking for a day trip away from Athens Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon is a good choice

History
The Acropolis is a city on a hill in Athens Greece. People come far and wide to see this site. The layout looks like this:

It consists of the Propylaia, the Parthenon, The temple of Athenia Nike as well as a couple more temples for her, The Erechtheion, The theater of Dinoysus, Rome and Augustus Alter, Oden of Herod Atticus and the Sanctuary of Zeus.

Most Important ones:
Propylaia: Is the gateway to the Acropolis. It was built during the years 438 to 432 BC.
Parthenon: Built after a war in 479 BC when the Greeks defeated the Persians.
The Temple of Athenia Nike: The temple of Athena Nike was added between 432 to 421 BC. It is small and you could easily miss it next to its brother structures.
The Erechtheion: The Erechtheion was started in about 420BC. It was built for a King (It's name sake) who was defeated by Poseidon.
The theater of Dinoysus: The place where the European theater first started.

Travel

http://www.travelocity.com/

Travelocity.com is a good cite to use when traveling to find hotels and flights. When traveling to see Zeus's Temple in Olympia I would suggest stopping in Athens first. If you are traveling from Texas where I live there is just a flight into Athens not into Olympia which is just fine since Athens has some amazing cites as well.

Example Itinerary: Arrive on a Monday in Athens after a 12 hour flight from Dallas. Your will be exhausted and probably want to head straight to a hotel for dinner, a shower, and a good nights sleep.

Starting out fresh Tuesday: They have hotels very close to the acropolis and you can get there by car or tour bus (You can get to the base but the surrounding paths are careless so plan on walking. Also eat a big breakfast because day bags are not allowed in.) Plan on getting there as early as possible to avoid large crowds. Here you can see all of the buildings on the acropolis and the museum there. If you are coming on a Tuesday both the museum and the Acropolis open at 8am-7pm in the summer and then 8am-sunset in the winter. After seeing the museum, the parthenon, the temple of athena nike, the erechtheion, head over to the Theater of Dionysus and enjoy this ancient theatrical site. Also check out the The Odeon of Herodes Atticus that is close to the theater. While up here you might want to check out  Areopagus of Athens which is on the west side or Kerameikos which is to the Northwest. Once done with all of this I would say it would be time to eat. I would suggest eating in Thission which is full of bars, cafes, and tons of night life. I would suggest sticking around here and enjoying your night before heading back to your hotel for the night. (I would suggest bringing a change of clothes if you are going clubbing.)

Wednesday: Rise and shine and get ready for a museum. The National Archaeological Museum
is our next stop because it houses Poseidon's statue along with tons of ancient art. I would suggest getting here at opening at 8:30 and staying till around 12 or 1. After grabbing lunch though it will be time to take an hours ride away from Athens to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon. Many companies over tours here if you do not wish to just go your self. This site is a nice get away though from the hustle and bustle of Athens so I would suggest taking your time here. After done with this site though I would say time for dinner and more night life. Or you could get a head start on the 4/5 hour trip to Olympia and get yourself a hotel near there. I would suggest this so that you can get started on the Museum early.

Thursday:Time for the Main event with Olympia. Depending on if you left the night before or this morning would effect how much time you have in the day to spend here. While in Olympia though today you will get to experience another Archaeological Museum, you can see the site of the ORIGINAL Olympics, you can see the temple of Hera (Zeus's sister/Wife) but most importantly you get to see the temple of ZEUS! This whole day I would suggest looking around all of these sites and maybe even the ongoing archaeological site that is still being researched and dug up. Enjoy all that this city has to offer you while here.

Friday: Time to start rounding things up. I would say today you travel to any site that you missed. You could keep exploring Olympia and the surrounding areas, you could go back to Athens, but if I were you I would take a a charter plane out to Crete early in the morning and stay for the day. The island as loads of archaeological sites and was home to the ancient Minoans. This whole island is loaded with history. Charter planes are the most common way to get here but you could also take a boat or scheduled flight.

After this final night it is time to head back to the states. I hope that you have enjoyed your stay in Greece!!!

The Temple Of Zeus

When coming to Greece there are loads of historic sites to see. I would suggest planning a trip to Olympia as one of the most important stops. For anyone that knows anything about Greece they should know about the Gods that watch over the Greek people and how important of a role that the Gods play in the people's lives past and present. Seeing as Zeus is the head of the Gods his temple's ruins would be a must see for anyone wishing to visit Greece. The temple and its sister God temple sites are all important things to see while in Greece if you truly wish to experience the Greek culture. The main reasons that I would advocate this site as being one of the most important is not just because Zeus is the head God but also because of what town it is in. Olympia is the location of the original Olympics and there is an open archaeological site going on so all in all this place as tons of interesting things to see.

The temple before

The temple after

The enormous temple is the most important building in the Altis. Seeing as Zeus is the head of the God's it is only fitting that his temple be in the very center in the Altis and be the largest. It began being built in 470 BC and was completed before 456 BC. The temple itself is an ideal example of Doric architecture and housed one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, The statue of Zeus. The statue was long ago destroyed though.

The temple was burnt in 426 AD and was badly damaged and then was finally destroyed by an earthquake in 551 AD. If you wish to see parts of the temple they are on display also in Olympia in the Olympia Archaeological Museum but you would have to travel to the Louvre in Paris to see things like the Metopes.
